A Gift from Molly Madigan

Some of you may remember Molly Madigan, a long-time clerk at the Wilsonville Public Library. Children
would wait patiently in line to talk to Molly at the circulation desk. They knew she always had time for
them and never rushed them while checking out their stacks of books.

Molly was dedicated to our library, generous with reading tips, and made us laugh with her dry sense of
humor. Greg adds “Molly was a witty, smart, and delightfully cynical observer of life. Always deeply
attuned to the person with whom she was speaking, she helped mold our Wilsonville Library into a
wonderful place, both to work and to visit. I miss her, and remember her often with fondness and a
smile.“

Molly passed away in 2022. In 2023 we learned that she had left the entirety of her IRA account to the
Wilsonville Public Library Foundation. Thank you, Molly, for this sizable bequest! We have added
Molly’s legacy gift to our permanent endowment fund.

Steve, Library Foundation Treasurer, remembers “First, was Molly’s involvement in getting books
for the library.  She would spend a lot of time going through catalogs looking for and ordering new
books for the library.  It looked almost like a hobby to me, and showed her commitment to the
library.”

Karen says “I loved working with Molly. She was genuinely interested in people. She wanted to
know what they were interested in and how their lives were going. She didn’t allow anyone to talk
down to her and encouraged me to stand up for myself when there was an issue either with a
patron or a co-worker. She was a wonderful photographer. She loved her cats and told hilarious
stories about them. I would bring my youngest daughter- who was 6 months old- to our weekly
staff meetings and everyone would pass her around, but she always ended up in Molly’s lap. Molly
was like a crazy aunt to my children and they loved her. Her bumper sticker was “Uppity Women
Unite!” and she lived it.”
